about

This is the first solo instrumental record by guitarist Jeff Kollman. Recorded on a Tascam 38- 1/2 inch tape machine in the home basement studio, Toledo Ohio in late '88 & early '89.

This record was slated to be released with Guitar Recordings / Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazine / Cherry Lane Music. Jeff was to be the 4th artist signed to the roster following Blues Saraceno, Randy Coven and violinist Mark Wood. While the deal was in motion, famed magazine writer John Stix who was Artist Relations at the label discovered Jeff's heavy metal band, Edwin Dare. Guitar Recordings wanted to release their record, 'The Unthinkable Deed', instead having seen the potential with the band. Jeff had his sites set on a major label deal for Edwin Dare and felt that the Guitar Recordings label would best suit his instrumental music only. Following was a fight over who owned the publishing for Edwin Dare with Jeff signing what he thought was an exclusive 5-year publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music for his instrumental works only. Such is the business of music. Jeff states: "It's all about timing and relationships. The timing was right for the record as Joe Satriani had broken through only a year before and 'Surfing With The Alien' was still on radio rotation. It became too difficult for me being a teenager to properly navigate through having no experience with greedy management and a music attorney not necessarily working with my best interest in mind. It was quite a learning experience but pretty disheartening at the time."
